The short answer
Choose whole life if you want guarantees: a fixed premium, guaranteed cash value growth and no moving parts. Choose IUL if you want flexibility and higher growth potential and you're comfortable with less predictability. Many families use both.
Side-by-side comparison
| Whole Life | IUL | |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | Fixed and guaranteed | Flexible within limits |
| Cash value growth | Guaranteed rate + possible dividends | Index-linked, with cap and floor |
| Downside protection | No market exposure | Floor (often 0%) on credited interest |
| Upside | Steady, moderate | Higher potential, limited by caps |
| Guarantees | Strongest | Fewer; depends on funding |
| Cost for same death benefit | Higher | Usually lower |
| Management needed | Low | Moderate: review regularly |
| Common uses | Legacy, infinite banking, conservative savings | Supplemental retirement income, growth, flexibility |
Cash value: guaranteed vs. potential
Whole life cash value follows a guaranteed schedule; dividends can add to it. IUL cash value depends on index performance within its cap and floor, minus policy charges. Over long periods a well-funded IUL may outperform, but it also carries more uncertainty: the illustrated rate is an assumption, not a promise.
Retirement income
Both can provide income through policy loans. Whole life loans are predictable. IUL often offers more loan options (like indexed or variable loans) that can be more efficient, or riskier. Either way, a policy designed for income must be funded properly and monitored so it doesn't lapse.
Which should you choose?
- Whole life if you want certainty, plan to use infinite banking, or are building a guaranteed legacy
- IUL if you want growth potential, flexible premiums and supplemental retirement income
- Both if you want a guaranteed foundation plus a growth component
The fastest way to decide is to see both designed for your age, health and budget. That's what our free policy review does.
Common questions
Is IUL or whole life better for retirement?
IUL generally offers more growth potential for supplemental retirement income; whole life offers more predictability. The better choice depends on your risk comfort and how consistently you can fund the policy.
Which is cheaper, IUL or whole life?
For the same death benefit, IUL usually has a lower minimum premium. But designs built for cash value growth are funded well above the minimum in either case.
Can I switch from whole life to IUL?
A 1035 exchange can move cash value from one policy to another without current taxes, but it may restart surrender charges and require new underwriting. Get a side-by-side review before replacing any policy.
Which is better for infinite banking?
Most infinite banking practitioners prefer dividend-paying whole life because of its guarantees and predictable loan behavior.
