Life insurance questions, answered

The questions people ask us most about whole life and IUL.

What is the difference between IUL and whole life insurance?

Whole life has a guaranteed level premium, a guaranteed cash value schedule and may pay dividends. Indexed universal life (IUL) has flexible premiums and credits interest based on a market index like the S&P 500, with a cap on the upside and a floor (often 0%) that protects credited interest from market losses.

Can life insurance help with retirement?

Permanent life insurance builds cash value you can access through policy loans or withdrawals. When the policy is designed and funded correctly and stays in force, that access is generally income-tax-free. It works best as one part of a plan, alongside your other savings.

Is a free policy review really free?

Yes. Gregory reviews your goals or your current policy, compares options from top-rated carriers and explains them in plain English. There is no cost and no obligation.

Is IUL a good investment?

IUL is life insurance, not an investment. It can be a strong long-term financial tool when properly designed and funded, offering protection plus index-linked growth with a floor. It's not a substitute for an emergency fund or a replacement for an employer 401(k) match.

What is the minimum age to buy whole life or IUL?

Policies can be issued from birth through roughly age 85, depending on the carrier. The younger and healthier you are, the more efficient the policy.

Do I need a medical exam?

Not always. Many carriers offer accelerated underwriting that can approve healthy applicants without an exam, depending on age and coverage amount.

What happens if I stop paying premiums?

With whole life, you may have options like reduced paid-up insurance or using cash value to pay premiums. With IUL, premiums are flexible, but the policy needs enough cash value to cover its charges or it can lapse.

How are you paid?

Gregory is a licensed agent and is paid a commission by the insurance company when a policy is placed. Your review is free either way.

Which insurance companies do you work with?

We have access to 80+ insurance companies and focus on carriers with strong financial strength ratings and a track record of treating policyholders fairly.

Can you review a policy I already have?

Yes. We'll check how it's performing, whether it's at risk of lapsing, and whether it still fits your goals. We never recommend replacing a policy unless it's clearly in your interest.

What is a modified endowment contract (MEC)?

A MEC is a life insurance policy that was funded beyond IRS limits. It loses some tax advantages: loans and withdrawals become taxable and may carry a penalty before age 59½. Good policy design avoids it.
